Pseudogenes like RPL23AP52 arise by duplication or retrotransposition events and typically retain sequence similarity to their parent gene but accumulate mutations that disrupt their coding potential. Unlike RPL23A, a functional ribosomal protein involved in protein synthesis and potentially linked to cancer, pseudogene 52 is catalogued in the human genome as a non-coding sequence without demonstrated expression or regulatory activity. Its nomenclature and classification are standardized by the HUGO Gene Nomenclature Committee (HGNC).
