Overview

Ribosomal protein L23a pseudogene 53 (RPL23AP53) is a non-protein-coding pseudogene located on chromosome 8 (reported also within or near the RPL23A locus on chromosome 12 in some sources)[1][4]. Unlike its parent gene, RPL23A, which encodes a component of the large (60S) ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis[8], RPL23AP53 does not translate into a functional protein. Recent research shows that its RNA expression levels are differentially regulated in primary and metastatic melanoma, with higher levels potentially associated with better patient survival and altered immune cell infiltration; however, there is no evidence of a direct mechanistic role in disease, and it is not a conventional drug target or receptor[7]. As a pseudogene, RPL23AP53 is primarily of interest as a possible biomarker in cancer biology, rather than a molecular target for therapy[7].
