Ribosomal protein L23a pseudogene 56 (RPL23AP56) is one of many pseudogenes related to the ribosomal protein L23a (RPL23A) gene. Pseudogenes are genomic DNA sequences similar to normal genes but typically nonfunctional—they do not encode active protein products. RPL23AP56 is annotated as a processed pseudogene without known protein-coding capacity or direct biological activity. The functional ribosomal protein L23a (RPL23A) is a structural component of the 60S ribosomal subunit with roles in ribosome assembly and possibly immune responses, but its pseudogenes—including RPL23AP56—do not carry out these functions. Conservation across species hints at possible undiscovered regulatory roles in rare cases, but currently, there is no evidence that RPL23AP56 itself represents a druggable target, disease biomarker, or participant in therapeutic strategies.
