It represents a non-functional copy of the ribosomal protein L23a gene and does not produce a functional protein. Like other ribosomal protein pseudogenes, it may have roles in genomic architecture or regulatory RNA processes, but no specific biological function, disease association, or drug interactions have been established to date for RPL23AP82 itself. Its main relevance is for gene and genome research, annotation, and may provide insight into pseudogene biology. There are over a hundred known ribosomal protein L23a pseudogenes, but the functions of these individual pseudogenes are mostly unknown, and RPL23AP82 is not recognized as a receptor, target, or biomarker.
