Unlike the functional RPL23A gene, which codes for a component of the 60S large ribosomal subunit essential for protein synthesis, RPL23AP90 lacks the capacity to produce a functional protein and is classified as a pseudogene[1][2][4].\n There are many ribosomal protein L23a pseudogenes distributed throughout the human genome, often the result of retrotransposition events[3][9]. The specific function of RPL23AP90 has not been documented, and like most processed pseudogenes, there is no evidence that it serves as a therapeutic target, disease gene, or biomarker[1][2][4][6][8].\n Some ribosomal protein L23a pseudogenes (such as RPL23AP53) have been studied for changes in expression in specific cancer contexts, but RPL23AP90 itself has not been implicated in disease or therapeutic pathways[9].
