Ribosomal protein L27 pseudogene 5 (RPL27P5) is a processed pseudogene related to the functional gene encoding ribosomal protein L27, which is a structural component of the 60S large ribosomal subunit. Pseudogenes such as RPL27P5 result from the duplication or retrotransposition of functional genes but typically lack the capacity for protein coding due to disabling mutations, deletions, or loss of regulatory elements[8][7][1][4]. While certain pseudogenes can be transcribed or have regulatory RNA roles, there is no data supporting such activity for RPL27P5 specifically. Thus, it is not regarded as a therapeutic target, biomarker, or safety liability in biomedical research[8][7][1][5]. RPL27P5 should not be confused with the functional gene RPL27, which encodes a ribosomal protein with established roles in protein synthesis[1][4]. There is no evidence of RPL27P5 translation, involvement in diseases, interaction with drugs, or therapeutic action. Its status as a "pseudogene" means it serves as a genomic fossil rather than an active molecular target[8][7][10].
