Overview

RPL27AP5, or ribosomal protein L27a pseudogene 5, is classified as a processed pseudogene derived from the parental RPL27A (ribosomal protein L27a) gene. Pseudogenes have traditionally been viewed as non-functional, but recent studies show that some, such as RPL27AP5, may be transcribed and translated. Specifically, RPL27AP5 expresses two protein variants potentially involved in ribosome biology: a ubiquitin variant (UbP5) and a ribosomal protein variant (S27aP5). These variants mature and localize similarly to their canonical counterparts; S27aP5 can integrate into ribosomes, possibly influencing ribosome complex composition and mRNA association. However, RPL27AP5 is not recognized as a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or transporter in any drug or disease pathway, and its functional relevance is speculative and not established in disease or therapy. It remains primarily a molecular and functional curiosity rather than a canonical pharmacological target.
