Ribosomal protein L28 pseudogene 2 (RPL28P2) is a processed pseudogene of the RPL28 gene, which normally encodes a component of the large 60S ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis. Pseudogenes like RPL28P2 do not encode functional proteins and are generally considered nonfunctional genomic elements. They typically arise through retrotransposition or duplication events and are dispersed throughout the genome. RPL28P2 has no known therapeutic or diagnostic use and is not involved in any identified biological processes or disease roles[1][9][13]. The true functional gene in this family is RPL28 (60S ribosomal protein L28), which codes for a cytoplasmic ribosomal protein with a role in protein synthesis[4][7]. The pseudogene RPL28P2 itself does not code for any active ribosomal protein, contribute to the ribosome structure, or possess any receptor, enzyme, transporter, or regulatory activity[1][9]. Pseudogenes can sometimes be transcribed, but there is no evidence that RPL28P2 transcripts are biologically functional. Multiple processed pseudogenes exist for ribosomal proteins, including RPL28, but these are considered genetic byproducts or "genomic fossils" without clinical or functional relevance[1][9][13].
