Ribosomal protein L28 pseudogene 5 (RPL28P5) is a processed pseudogene representing a nonfunctional copy of the RPL28 gene, which encodes a structural constituent of the 60S ribosomal subunit[2][8]. While a portion of ribosomal protein pseudogenes may be transcribed and rarely translated into peptides, in most cases these RNAs and any peptides produced are not biologically meaningful, and the pseudogene itself has no established functional or pathological role[4][8]. The active counterpart, ribosomal protein L28 (RPL28), is involved in cytoplasmic protein synthesis and may show altered expression in select cancers, but RPL28P5 does not encode a functional protein and has no recognized utility as a therapeutic target, biomarker, or disease-associated gene[1][2][8].
