Its presence is the result of duplication and retrotransposition events involving the functional RPL29 gene[3][10]. Note: The main protein of the family, ribosomal protein L29 (RPL29), is a structural component of the ribosome important for protein synthesis, but pseudogene 16 is only a non-coding genomic sequence without biological activity[1][3][10].
