Overview

Ribosomal protein L29 pseudogene 21 (RPL29P21) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome, derived from the gene encoding ribosomal protein L29. Unlike the parent gene (RPL29), which codes for a core component of the 60S ribosomal subunit, RPL29P21 lacks the ability to code for a functional protein and is believed not to participate in protein synthesis or other known biological functions. Pseudogenes like RPL29P21 are typically genomic "fossils" that result from gene duplication and loss of coding capacity and are found dispersed throughout the genome. The parent gene, ribosomal protein L29 (RPL29), encodes a structural ribosomal subunit protein essential for protein synthesis and cell growth, but RPL29P21 does not share these properties. Processed pseudogenes may occasionally be transcribed or play regulatory roles, but no such functions have been described for RPL29P21 as of current databases and literature.
