Ribosomal protein L3 pseudogene

Molecular classification
Other, Pseudogene
01

Overview

The ribosomal protein L3 pseudogene is a genomic DNA sequence that is homologous to the gene encoding ribosomal protein L3 but has acquired disabling mutations that prevent it from producing a functional protein product[9][6]. Pseudogenes like this are non-coding and generally do not have known biological functions. They are not considered therapeutic targets, as they do not encode a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other actionable protein product[9][6]. There may be several such processed pseudogenes scattered through the genome corresponding to the functional ribosomal protein L3 gene[1][3]. The parent gene, ribosomal protein L3 (RPL3), encodes a protein that is an essential component of the 60S ribosomal subunit, involved in protein synthesis[1][3][4]. However, the pseudogene itself does not encode this or any protein and does not participate in the biological or pathological functions of the ribosome or its associated pathways[9][6].
