Ribosomal protein L3 pseudogene 5 (RPL3P5) is a processed pseudogene derived from the functional ribosomal protein L3 gene (RPL3). Unlike the canonical RPL3 gene—which encodes a protein component of the 60S ribosomal subunit essential for protein synthesis—RPL3P5 does not produce a functional protein and is not involved in ribosomal structure or function. Pseudogenes such as RPL3P5 are common in the genome, often arising through gene duplication or retrotransposition events, and typically lack biological activity[3][5]. In rare cases, pseudogenes can be transcribed and have regulatory impacts on their parent genes, but no such function has been attributed to RPL3P5 specifically[3][5].
