Ribosomal protein L3 pseudogene 7 (RPL3P7) is a processed pseudogene derived from the ribosomal protein L3 gene (RPL3). Unlike the functional RPL3 gene, which encodes an essential structural protein for the 60S ribosomal subunit, RPL3P7 does not produce a functional protein product and is not involved in protein synthesis or canonical ribosomal activities. The presence of RPL3P7 reflects the common phenomenon of ribosomal protein genes being duplicated and retrotransposed throughout the genome as pseudogenes. Such pseudogenes are generally considered nonfunctional genomic elements, although they may occasionally be coexpressed in gene expression datasets. RPL3P7 is referenced in some high-throughput studies as part of gene expression clusters correlating with cancer incidence, but this is likely as a bystander effect rather than a functional causal role. There are no known drugs acting on this pseudogene, nor is it classified as an actionable therapeutic target for any disease.
