Overview

A ribosomal protein L31 pseudogene is a genomic DNA sequence that closely resembles the gene encoding ribosomal protein L31 but is typically non-functional due to mutations or truncations. Human genomes harbor many ribosomal protein pseudogenes, dispersed across different chromosomes, created by retrotranspositional mechanisms such as L1 retrotransposons in ancestral primates[5]. Pseudogenes do not encode functional proteins and are presumed to lack biological activity. They are catalogued and studied for evolutionary, genomic, and transcriptomic purposes. The functional ribosomal protein L31 is a component of the 60S ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis, but pseudogenes do not contribute to this function[1][3][5].
