Overview

Ribosomal protein L31 pseudogene 30 (RPL31P30) is a pseudogene derived from the ribosomal protein L31 gene[1][4]. It is located on chromosome 2 at position 2p15 and spans coordinates 61856695 to 61857062[4]. As a pseudogene, RPL31P30 is classified as a non-functional gene copy that lacks protein-coding capability, containing 0 exons[4]. RPL31P30 represents one of multiple processed pseudogenes dispersed throughout the genome that originated from the functional RPL31 gene[1]. The functional RPL31 gene encodes a ribosomal protein that is a component of the 60S ribosomal subunit and belongs to the L31E family of ribosomal proteins[1]. However, as a pseudogene, RPL31P30 does not produce a functional protein and is not considered a therapeutic target. Pseudogenes like RPL31P30 are thought to provide a fossil record of gene and genome evolution[5]. While most pseudogenes are non-functional, they can occasionally retain some regulatory elements or serve as sources of regulatory RNA molecules. The existence of multiple RPL31 pseudogenes throughout the genome is typical for genes encoding ribosomal proteins, which often have numerous pseudogene copies as a result of their evolutionary history[1].
