Overview

Ribosomal protein L31 pseudogene 38 (RPL31P38) is one of many processed pseudogenes derived from the ribosomal protein L31 gene. Like other pseudogenes, RPL31P38 is a non-functional segment of DNA that resembles the sequence of the parent ribosomal protein gene, but it does not produce a functional protein product. These pseudogenes arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition and have accumulated mutations that prevent them from encoding a functional protein. RPL31P38 has no known biological activity or role in disease, is not druggable, and has no relevance as a biomarker or therapeutic target[10][14][17]. RPL31 is an actively expressed ribosomal protein gene, but its numerous pseudogenes, including RPL31P38, are non-functional genomic elements[1][4][8][10]. Pseudogenes such as RPL31P38 are widely present in the human genome and are often annotated in genomic databases, but they do not encode proteins, do not participate in ribosome function, and are not involved in human disease or targeted by drugs[8][10][14]. Sometimes, pseudogenes may be transcribed, but there is no evidence that RPL31P38 or similar L31 pseudogenes have functional roles[10][14][17].
