Unlike the functional RPL31 gene, RPL31P57 does not encode an active protein and does not participate directly in ribosome structure or catalysis. Ribosomal protein pseudogenes like RPL31P57 may have regulatory functions at the RNA level, such as acting as endogenous competitive RNAs (ceRNAs) or providing short interfering RNAs that modulate the parent gene’s expression.
