Overview

Ribosomal protein L34 pseudogene 19 (RPL34P19) is a human processed pseudogene related to the functional ribosomal protein L34 gene, which encodes a component of the large 60S ribosomal subunit and is critical for protein synthesis. However, as a pseudogene, RPL34P19 has no evidence of protein-coding capacity and does not produce a functional protein. There are many ribosomal protein pseudogenes dispersed throughout the human genome, thought to arise from the retrotransposition of mRNA from the functional gene (in this case, RPL34). The functional RPL34 gene is associated with the ribosome and is important in normal protein synthesis and some disease contexts, but the pseudogene RPL34P19 does not participate in these roles. Pseudogenes like RPL34P19 are sometimes used as references in genetic studies, but they do not themselves serve as therapeutic, diagnostic, or drug targets.
