These pseudogenes arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and are typically transcriptionally inactive, although in some contexts, ribosomal protein pseudogenes are reported to regulate the expression of their functional parent genes via RNA-mediated mechanisms such as acting as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) or sources of short interfering RNAs. There is no evidence that RPL35P5 encodes a ribosomal protein or acts as a therapeutic target[5][9][11].
