Ribosomal protein L35a pseudogene 31 (RPL35AP31) is a processed pseudogene of the ribosomal protein L35a gene. It does not encode a functional protein and is not known to have biological activity. Pseudogenes such as RPL35AP31 are remnants of ancestral genes that have lost their protein-coding ability through mutation. The functional gene, RPL35A, encodes a component of the 60S ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis, but the pseudogene variant (RPL35AP31) does not participate in ribosome structure or function. There are no known disease associations, drug interactions, or therapeutic roles attributed to this pseudogene. RPL35AP31 should not be confused with the functional ribosomal protein L35a (RPL35A), which is involved in ribosome structure and is associated with Diamond-Blackfan anemia. There are numerous RPL35A pseudogenes described in the human genome; these are distinct from the functional locus and are generally non-functional.
