Overview

Ribosomal protein L35a pseudogene 7 (RPL35AP7) is a human pseudogene that does not encode a functional protein. It is a processed pseudogene derived from the ancestral ribosomal protein L35a gene (RPL35A), which encodes a protein component of the large 60S ribosomal subunit involved in cytoplasmic protein synthesis. Like most pseudogenes, RPL35AP7 is generally not transcribed or translated and has no known direct biological function or therapeutic relevance. Some genome-wide analyses occasionally report disease associations for pseudogenes through linkage or transcriptomic correlations, and RPL35AP7 has been listed in some datasets as associated with inflammatory bowel disease, but this does not establish it as a validated disease gene or therapeutic target[1][9]. RPL35AP7 is distinct from the protein-coding RPL35A gene: the pseudogene does not code for a ribosomal protein nor directly influence ribosome structure or function[1][9]. There is no evidence RPL35AP7 serves as a biomarker or has interacting drugs, molecular mechanisms, or safety concerns relevant for drug discovery or clinical applications[1][9]. Functional roles of some pseudogenes are being investigated in research settings, often as regulators of their parent genes' expression via non-coding RNA mechanisms, but no such role is confirmed for RPL35AP7[8][9].
