Overview

Ribosomal protein L36a pseudogene 28 (RPL36AP28) is a human pseudogene located on chromosome 7, associated by sequence similarity with the protein-coding gene RPL36A, which encodes a ribosomal protein found in the large 60S ribosomal subunit. RPL36AP28 does not encode a functional protein and is considered part of the vast family of ribosomal pseudogenes dispersed across the human genome. While ribosomal pseudogenes may participate in complex gene regulatory networks—such as producing noncoding RNAs involved in RNA interference or acting as miRNA decoys—there is currently no direct evidence indicating that RPL36AP28 has a clear biological function or disease association in humans. Pseudogenes in general have been implicated in gene regulation and may impact disease processes through transcript competition, but specific involvement of RPL36AP28 in any pathology or drug targeting is unreported.

Biological functions

Noncoding RNA regulation (general pseudogene function, not specific to RPL36AP28)Potential roles in gene regulation via RNA mechanisms, as suggested for pseudogenes generally, but not directly shown for this instance
