Overview

RPL36AP50 is classified as a processed pseudogene of the ribosomal protein L36a (RPL36A) gene. Pseudogenes are genomic DNA sequences similar to normal genes but are non-functional; they typically arise by gene duplication or retrotransposition and have lost the ability to encode a protein[14]. RPL36AP50 retains sequence homology to RPL36A, a component of the 60S large ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis, but does not produce a functional ribosomal protein[2][7][14]. Unlike its parent gene, RPL36AP50 has no known direct biological or pathological roles, no associated molecular function or disease, and is not regarded as a therapeutic target. General research on pseudogenes suggests they can sometimes regulate their cognate genes at the RNA level—via mechanisms such as competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) or microRNA decoy activity[4]—but such a function has not been documented specifically for RPL36AP50. There is also no evidence for involvement in human diseases, nor any relevance for drugs, biomarkers, or safety concerns. RPL36AP50 (ribosomal protein L36a pseudogene 50) is a non-coding pseudogene, not a functional receptor or therapeutic target, and has no current clinical or biological relevance beyond being part of the genome's landscape of ribosomal protein pseudogenes[2][6][7][8][14].
