Overview

Ribosomal protein L36a pseudogene 54 (RPL36AP54) is classified as a processed pseudogene in the human genome. It is named due to homology with the functional ribosomal protein L36a gene, which encodes a component of the 60S large ribosomal subunit, but RPL36AP54 itself does not encode a functional protein. Like other ribosomal protein pseudogenes, it is a non-coding genomic sequence that originated from retrotransposition or gene duplication events and acquired disabling mutations preventing protein product formation. Although some pseudogenes are transcribed and may play roles in gene regulation as non-coding RNAs, there is no current evidence for any functional RNA or protein product, nor direct implication in disease or pharmacology for RPL36AP54 specifically. It is not considered a therapeutic target, enzyme, receptor, or otherwise druggable molecule, and has no known interacting drugs or established biomarker utility. RPL36AP54 is a member of a large family of ribosomal protein pseudogenes, which are dispersed throughout the genome and typically lack function. This gene should not be confused with the functional *RPL36A* gene or other protein-coding ribosomal genes. There is no evidence this pseudogene is mis-spelled or incorrectly annotated, but its lack of function means it is not a relevant drug or disease target in current biomedical practice.
