Overview

Ribosomal protein L39 is a small, highly basic structural component of the 60S large subunit of eukaryotic ribosomes, encoded by the RPL39 gene and located in the cytoplasm[1][4][5]. It plays a critical role in catalyzing cellular protein synthesis and maintaining ribosome structure. The protein is a member of the S39E family and is co-transcribed with the U69 small nucleolar RNA gene in humans. RPL39 is essential for organismal growth and viability, with disrupted function linked to defects in cell proliferation, embryonic development, and some cancers[8]. There are multiple pseudogenes of RPL39 scattered throughout the genome. ENSG00000258627 refers to a pseudogene, not the coding sequence for RPL39[7].
