Overview

Ribosomal protein L39-like (RPL39L) is a protein-coding gene that encodes a protein highly similar to canonical ribosomal protein L39. RPL39L is primarily a male germ cell-specific component of the ribosome and is essential for sperm formation and male fertility; it replaces its paralog RPL39 in the ribosome of male germ cells[1][7]. The ribosomes containing RPL39L have a distinct polypeptide exit tunnel, influencing the translation and folding of male germ-cell-specific proteins[7]. Although classified as a ribosomal protein, it is currently unclear whether RPL39L can function independently of ribosomes[1][3]. Diseases reportedly associated with RPL39L include lacrimal gland carcinoma and seborrheic infantile dermatitis[1]. There is no evidence currently that RPL39L is a direct therapeutic target, nor are there drugs known to interact with it[1][7].
