Ribosomal protein L39 pseudogene 5 (RPL39P5) is classified as a processed pseudogene, which means it is a nonfunctional genomic DNA sequence similar to the functional ribosomal protein L39 gene. RPL39P5 is predicted, based on sequence similarity, to be a structural constituent of ribosomes and potentially involved in translation, and it is thought to localize to the cytosolic large ribosomal subunit; however, there is no evidence that it is transcribed or translated into a functional protein in humans. As a pseudogene, it does not serve as a direct target for drugs, does not play a known role in disease, and is not considered a therapeutically relevant target or biomarker. RPL39P5 is among thousands of ribosomal protein pseudogenes distributed across the human genome, typically arising through retrotransposition and genomic duplication events.
