Overview

Ribosomal protein L4 pseudogene 2 (RPL4P2) is a human processed pseudogene, related in sequence to the ribosomal protein L4 gene (RPL4), but does not code for a functional protein product. Pseudogenes such as RPL4P2 arise through duplication or retrotransposition events and are generally transcriptionally silent, though some can have regulatory effects as non-coding RNAs. RPL4P2 has no known coding potential, does not participate in ribosome assembly, and is not considered a therapeutic drug target. There is currently no evidence for RPL4P2 having direct roles in disease, drug interaction, or being used as a biomarker. Important note: The functional ribosomal protein L4 (RPL4) is different—it is a protein-coding gene and is part of the large ribosomal subunit essential for protein synthesis. RPL4P2 is only a noncoding pseudogene related to the RPL4 family, and not a receptor, enzyme, or transporter.
