Overview

Ribosomal protein L4 pseudogene 7 (RPL4P7) is a processed pseudogene of the ribosomal protein L4 (RPL4) gene. While the canonical RPL4 gene encodes a protein that is a structural component of the 60S ribosomal subunit and participates in protein synthesis within the cytoplasm[1][3][8], the pseudogene RPL4P7 does *not* encode a functional protein. Like many ribosomal protein family genes, RPL4 has numerous processed pseudogenes widely dispersed throughout the genome[1][3]. These pseudogenes usually arise from retrotransposition events and are generally considered non-functional, lacking known protein-coding ability and specific biological function in ribosome assembly or translational regulation[1][5]. There are no reports in major public databases or the literature indicating that RPL4P7 itself is implicated as a therapeutic target, biomarker, or disease gene. Is there something wrong with this target? Yes. RPL4P7 is a pseudogene, not a protein-coding gene or a therapeutic target. It should not be considered a conventional molecular target (receptor, enzyme, transporter, etc.). Most available data pertain to the functional RPL4 gene, not to its pseudogenes. Occasionally, pseudogenes have regulatory roles at the RNA level, but there is no evidence that RPL4P7 has such a role, and it is not a target of any approved or experimental drugs[1][3][5]. For research or drug targeting, information about RPL4 (the functional, protein-coding gene) should be used instead[1][2][3][8].
