Overview

Ribosomal protein L5 pseudogene 1 (RPL5P1) is a processed pseudogene that arose from retrotransposition of the RPL5 mRNA. It does not encode a functional protein and is scattered in the genome alongside many other ribosomal protein pseudogenes. Pseudogenes like RPL5P1 are commonly found throughout the human genome and may share high sequence similarity to their parent gene but generally lack biological function and are not considered druggable targets or disease modulators. In contrast, the parent gene RPL5 encodes a critical ribosomal protein involved in ribosome biogenesis and has clinical significance in rare syndromes and some cancers.
