Overview

Ribosomal protein L5 pseudogene 20 (RPL5P20) is a processed pseudogene located in the human genome that shares sequence homology with the functional ribosomal protein L5 gene (RPL5). Unlike the parent RPL5 gene, which encodes a critical structural component of the 60S ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis and cellular homeostasis, RPL5P20 does not produce a functional protein. Pseudogenes such as RPL5P20 are typically transcriptionally silent and do not participate in physiological or pathological processes, nor are they recognized as therapeutic drug targets. The functional RPL5 gene plays important roles in ribosome assembly, p53 regulation, and tumor suppression, but these functions are not attributable to its pseudogenes, including RPL5P20.
