Overview

Ribosomal protein L5 pseudogene 23 (RPL5P23) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome and does not encode a functional protein. It is derived from the ribosomal protein L5 gene (RPL5) but, like most ribosomal protein pseudogenes, does not produce any product involved in ribosome assembly or function. There is no evidence that RPL5P23 has a biological or disease role, nor is it a drug target or biomarker. It is one of many non-functional copies of ribosomal protein genes dispersed throughout the genome[3][7]. The functional gene, RPL5, encodes the 60S ribosomal protein L5, which is part of the large ribosomal subunit and essential for protein synthesis, but the pseudogene RPL5P23 itself is non-coding and not a molecular target[1][6].
