Overview

Ribosomal protein L5 pseudogene 31 (RPL5P31) is a processed pseudogene and does not encode a functional protein. While it shares sequence similarity with the functional ribosomal protein L5 gene, it is not translated into protein and does not have known biological functions or disease associations. It is one of multiple ribosomal protein pseudogenes commonly found in the human genome, and is not considered a therapeutic target. Pseudogenes are DNA segments similar in sequence to functional genes but are generally non-functional due to mutations or lack of regulatory elements necessary for expression. The functional gene, RPL5, encodes a component of the 60S ribosomal subunit and is involved in ribosome assembly, protein synthesis, and, when mutated, is linked to disorders such as Diamond-Blackfan anemia. However, RPL5P31 is one among many non-coding, processed pseudogenes of RPL5. No evidence supports therapeutic targeting or biological function for RPL5P31. Since RPL5P31 does not code for a protein and lacks known biological activity, it has no relevance as a drug target, mechanism of action, biomarker, or disease role. Given this, RPL5P31 should not be treated as a functional molecular target in biological or therapeutic research.
