Pseudogenes are generally non-functional DNA sequences derived from ancestral protein-coding genes, lacking the ability to encode active proteins. RPL5P5 occurs in the human genome as a non-coding segment and does not produce ribosomal protein or participate in ribosome biogenesis or cellular regulation. In contrast, the functional gene ribosomal protein L5 (RPL5) plays essential roles as a 60S ribosomal subunit protein, critical for protein synthesis, nucleolar organization, and extra-ribosomal tumor suppression through interaction with the p53 pathway and c-Myc. Disease associations, therapeutic targeting, and biological functions are all attributed to the coding gene RPL5, not to the pseudogene RPL5P5[1][2][3][4][5].
