Overview

RPL7P16 (ribosomal protein L7 pseudogene 16) is a processed pseudogene derived from the RPL7 gene, which encodes the 60S ribosomal protein L7, a component of the large subunit of the eukaryotic ribosome[5]. Pseudogenes like RPL7P16 are genetic sequences that resemble functional genes but typically lack coding potential due to disabling mutations or sequence interruptions. While the parental RPL7 protein plays a role in ribosomal structure and cellular protein synthesis, RPL7P16 does not produce a functional protein and has no known biological activity or therapeutic relevance. Such pseudogenes are common in the genome and are generally considered nonfunctional "genetic fossils," though in rare cases other pseudogenes can contribute regulatory RNAs, this is not documented for RPL7P16[5].
