Overview

Ribosomal protein pseudogenes, such as ENSG00000220370, are DNA sequences in the human genome originally derived from ribosomal protein genes (in this case, RPL7A). Over evolutionary time, these sequences have accumulated disabling mutations, truncations, or rearrangements, and thus do not code for functional ribosomal proteins. While most pseudogenes are nonfunctional remnants, some are transcribed and may produce RNA or short peptides, but such products typically lack canonical ribosomal or regulatory function. Only a small fraction of ribosomal protein pseudogenes are transcriptionally or translationally active, and their roles, if any, are not well characterized. This particular pseudogene is not considered a drug target nor is it associated with any established physiological or pathological function.

Currently no established biological function. Most ribosomal protein pseudogenes are non-functional genomic sequences; however, a minority can be transcribed and even translated into peptides, some of which may have cellular functions, but this is the exception rather than the rule

Other: Most ribosomal pseudogenes are not associated with disease. There are rare reports that some pseudogenes may, when transcribed/translated, have potential effects on cellular biology, but this is not a general property and is not established for ENSG00000220370 specifically
