Overview

Ribosomal protein L7a pseudogene 33 (RPL7AP33) is a processed pseudogene of the functional ribosomal protein L7a gene (RPL7A)[1][11]. Pseudogenes are genomic DNA sequences similar to normal genes but typically non-functional due to mutations that prevent correct expression and translation[1]. There are many ribosomal protein pseudogenes dispersed throughout the human genome, and they do not encode functional proteins. Some pseudogenes in general can have biological activity via RNA, such as serving as microRNA sponges, but there is no evidence for such a role for RPL7AP33 specifically[1][14]. The functional gene RPL7A encodes a component of the large ribosomal 60S subunit involved in protein synthesis[4][7]. RPL7AP33 does not encode any ribosomal protein and currently has no demonstrated biological, disease, or therapeutic relevance[1][8][11]. Its listing is due to genomic annotation rather than clinical relevance.
