Overview

Ribosomal protein L7a pseudogene 61 (RPL7AP61) is a non-coding DNA sequence in the human genome that resembles the functional ribosomal protein L7a (RPL7A) gene but does not encode a protein product. Pseudogenes such as RPL7AP61 are considered to be genomic "fossils" formed through gene duplication or retrotransposition events that subsequently acquired mutations preventing expression of a functional protein. RPL7AP61 is not believed to have a direct biochemical or therapeutic role; its potential functions are limited to possible gene regulation or genomic structural roles specific to certain contexts, but no such functions have been established for this pseudogene. The functional, protein-coding gene in this family is RPL7A, which encodes a ribosomal protein essential for protein synthesis. RPL7AP61 itself is one of many processed pseudogenes dispersed throughout the human genome.
