Ribosomal protein L8 pseudogene 2 (RPL8P2) is annotated as a human pseudogene, meaning it closely resembles the functional ribosomal protein L8 (RPL8) gene but is not itself protein-coding[2][4]. It does not produce a functional protein and is therefore not considered a therapeutic or pharmacologic target. The main gene, RPL8, encodes a structural component of the 60S ribosomal subunit with known roles in protein synthesis and in certain diseases. In contrast, RPL8P2 has not been attributed biological function, disease relevance, or clinical utility[2][4]. No drugs target RPL8P2, and there are no issues related to biomarkers or safety because it is not a protein or functional RNA product. The main potential confusion comes from similarity to the canonical RPL8 gene, which is functionally relevant, but RPL8P2 itself is a processed pseudogene without a demonstrated role in cellular or disease processes[2][4].
