Ribosomal protein S10 pseudogene 16 (RPS10P16) is a processed pseudogene found in the human genome, derived from the ribosomal protein S10 gene. It does not encode a functional protein, lacks clearly defined biological or disease roles, and does not act as a drug target or biomarker. While some pseudogenes may be transcribed, the majority—including RPS10P16—are considered nonfunctional genomic elements, reflecting evolutionary processes rather than current biological activity. Pseudogenes like RPS10P16 are abundant for ribosomal proteins due to evolutionary duplication and retrotransposition events. They are classified distinctly from functional “parent” genes. The functional ribosomal protein S10 gene (RPS10) is involved in ribosome composition and linked to Diamond-Blackfan anemia when mutated.
