Overview

Ribosomal protein S12 pseudogene 16 (RPS12P16) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome related to the protein-coding gene RPS12, which encodes a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit involved in protein synthesis. Pseudogenes like RPS12P16 are gene copies that have lost the ability to code for a protein. Such pseudogenes generally do not produce functional proteins and are not considered therapeutic targets. Multiple processed pseudogenes exist for ribosomal protein genes, distributed throughout the human genome. The functional ribosomal protein S12 is an essential component of the small (40S) ribosomal subunit and is involved in the fidelity of translation and antibiotic response, but RPS12P16 specifically is a pseudogene and does not share these properties. No reliable evidence exists of RPS12P16 being expressed, having biological functions, or involvement in disease, nor of any drug interaction or biomarker utility. RPS12P16 is a pseudogene with no coding function or clinical relevance as a therapeutic or diagnostic target.
