Ribosomal protein S12 pseudogene 21 (RPS12P21) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome. Unlike the functional ribosomal protein S12, which is a component of the small (40S) subunit of the cytoplasmic ribosome and participates in mRNA translation, RPS12P21 does not encode a functional protein. Pseudogenes like RPS12P21 are generally transcriptionally inactive, though some can produce RNA with regulatory functions; there is no evidence for functional relevance of RPS12P21. Such pseudogenes are common in the human genome, especially for ribosomal protein genes. RPS12P21 has no established role as a therapeutic target, no drug interactions, and no relevant disease or biomarker associations. If a functional ribosomal protein S12 target is intended (rather than its pseudogene), the correct entity is "Ribosomal protein S12" (RPS12), a ribosome component with roles in translation and potentially disease.
