Target intelligence / Profile preview
Ribosomal protein S12 pseudogene 28 (RPS12P28) is a processed pseudogene, and not a functional protein-coding gene. Pseudogenes like RPS12P28 are nonfunctional segments of genomic DNA that are similar to normal genes but have lost their protein-coding ability through mutations or truncations. RPS12P28 is related in sequence to the functional ribosomal protein S12 gene, but as a pseudogene, it does not produce a functional protein product and does not have known biological functions, therapeutic relevance, or associated drugs. Pseudogenes are common in the human genome, especially for highly conserved proteins such as ribosomal proteins. They can arise through gene duplication or retrotransposition, and while they may be transcribed in some cases, they generally do not encode proteins and are not considered valid drug targets. The canonical ribosomal protein S12 (RPS12) is a component of the small ribosomal subunit and is involved in translation, but RPS12P28 is a pseudogene only related by sequence homology. There is no evidence or reporting that pseudogene RPS12P28 is implicated in any disease, is functionally expressed, or is used as a biomarker or therapeutic target. This entry is primarily for gene annotation and genomic reference—not a functional or druggable molecular target.
