Overview

Ribosomal protein S12 pseudogene 31 (RPS12P31) is a processed pseudogene. It is a non-functional genomic DNA sequence derived from the RPS12 gene, which encodes a component of the ribosomal 40S subunit. Unlike its parent gene, RPS12P31 does not produce a protein and is generally considered transcriptionally silent. Such pseudogenes are remnants of genomic retrotransposition events and are common for ribosomal proteins, with no current evidence supporting a biological role or involvement in known human diseases[3][5][8]. This pseudogene is identified in gene annotation databases but lacks protein-coding capacity and functional annotation[2][8].
