It was derived from retrotransposition events and is not expressed or active as a ribosomal protein; such pseudogenes are typically considered evolutionary molecular passengers, and their annotation is important mostly for correct genome mapping rather than direct biological or pharmacological relevance[9]. The parent gene, RPS12, encodes a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit, but RPS12P5 itself is not involved in protein synthesis nor any known disease mechanism or therapeutic action[1][2][8].
