Ribosomal protein S13 pseudogene 2 (RPS13P2) is a processed pseudogene derived from the parental ribosomal protein S13 (RPS13) gene[6][8]. Pseudogenes such as RPS13P2 are DNA segments resembling known genes but are typically non-functional due to mutations or truncations that prevent protein translation[6][8]. Specifically, processed pseudogenes are formed through retrotransposition of mRNA transcripts from their parent gene and usually lack introns and regulatory sequences[6][8]. RPS13P2 itself does not encode a functional protein, does not act as a receptor or enzyme, and has no known therapeutic or biomarker value. There is no evidence in the scientific literature indicating any pathological or physiological role for RPS13P2. It remains a genomic fossil, while its parental gene, RPS13, encodes a component of the ribosomal 40S subunit, which is essential for protein synthesis in the cytoplasm[3][7].
