Ribosomal protein S15 pseudogene 2 (RPS15P2) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome that derives from the functional ribosomal protein S15 gene (RPS15)[1]. It was likely formed during evolutionary retrotransposition events, wherein mRNA from protein-coding genes was reverse-transcribed and inserted back into the genome[2]. Pseudogenes like RPS15P2 do not encode functional proteins and typically lack regulatory promoter sequences necessary for transcription. Unlike the parent gene encoding 40S ribosomal protein S15—a crucial component of the small subunit of ribosomes involved in protein synthesis—RPS15P2 is considered biologically inert[1][2][6]. There are many ribosomal protein pseudogenes in the human genome, reflecting an evolutionary burst of pseudogene formation in primates[2]. RPS15P2 is not regarded as a therapeutic target, has no established function, and is not implicated in any disease processes, drug interactions, or biomarker applications[1][6].
