Ribosomal protein S15a pseudogene 28 (RPS15AP28) is a processed pseudogene in the human genome, meaning it structurally resembles the functional ribosomal protein S15a gene (RPS15A) but does not encode a protein. Instead, its transcribed RNA may act as a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA), binding microRNAs that would otherwise suppress the parental gene. This function can modulate the expression of RPS15A and possibly impact protein synthesis rates in cells. Studies have shown upregulation of related ribosomal protein pseudogenes, including RPS15AP28, correlates with aggressive cancer behavior and poor prognosis, likely through enhanced ribosome biogenesis and cell proliferation. While RPS15AP28 itself is not a classical drug target, emerging RNA-focused drug discovery may attempt to modulate its ceRNA activity to restore normal regulation of ribosomal protein genes in cancer
