Ribosomal protein S15a pseudogene 38 (RPS15AP38) is a human processed pseudogene related to the RPS15A gene, which encodes ribosomal protein S15a, a structural component of the 40S ribosomal subunit. Unlike the protein-coding RPS15A gene, RPS15AP38 does not encode a functional protein and has no known biological function, disease association, or therapeutic relevance. It is one of multiple pseudogenes for RPS15A distributed throughout the genome. RPS15AP38 is classified as a pseudogene, meaning it is a non-functional, non-coding DNA sequence similar to a genuine gene (here, RPS15A). Pseudogenes are typically not transcribed or translated into proteins and do not serve as receptors, enzymes, transporters, or other molecular drug targets. There are numerous processed pseudogenes of RPS15A scattered in the genome, of which RPS15AP38 is one example. There is no current evidence that RPS15AP38 is involved in signaling, pathology, or can be manipulated with drugs; thus, it is not considered a therapeutic target.
